Course Offerings

  • LANG 0100 Elementary Armenian I

This course is designed to provide students with a foundational understanding of the Western Armenian language. Western Armenian is one of the two standardized forms of the Armenian language, once widely spoken in the Ottoman Empire, and today primarily spoken by the Armenian diaspora in various countries (Lebanon, Syria, Canada, France, USA, etc.). Students will develop basic speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in Western Armenian while also gaining insights into Armenian culture, history, traditions, and its linguistic development from Proto-Indo-European. Special emphasis will be placed on issues related to heritage languages, comparative Indo-European linguistics, prescriptivism, dialectal differences, and influences from the Anatolian and Caucasian linguistic areas.
