  • LANG 0100 684 Elementary Juhuri I

This course offers basic conversation, reading, and writing skills in Juhuri, the heritage language of the Jewish communities rooted in the Eastern Caucasus Mountains. Students will use their skills to contribute to advocacy projects for Juhuri culture. Language learning in this course will stem from communication with classmates and experienced Juhuri language activists as well as engagement with works of literature, folklore, music, and theater. Because the Juhuri language is not anchored in any single nation-state, this course aims to help students reexamine Jewish, Soviet, and Middle Eastern histories from a transnational and transregional perspective. Ethical relationship-building with cultural activists and nonprofit leaders will be essential to this process. Specific areas of focus will be determined by students’ personal, professional, and research interests.
