Course Description/Objectives:
Business Chinese is a one-year Chinese language course for business oriented subjects. It is designed for students who have studied Chinese for 3 years in a regular college program or with equivalent Chinese language proficiency. This course is aimed to enhance students’ language skills in a business context and to promote their understanding about business environment and culture in contemporary China. The text is developed from real business cases from real multinational companies that have successfully embarked on the Chinese market. The forms of classes include lectures, drills on vocabulary and sentence patterns, and discussions. Class will be conducted primarily in Chinese. Students are expected to answer questions with newly learned vocabulary and patterns. In addition to the course textbook, students will learn to read business news in Chinese selected from various sources including Wall Street Journal. By the end of the semester, students are expected to (a) enhance the cultural awareness of contemporary China and the Chinese business world; (b) gain vocabulary and fluency in Chinese to function more confidently and comfortably in real business settings; (c) access business news and information in Chinese.
