Short Biography

A natural ASL signer, originally from Baltimore, MD, Joy Maisel obtained her Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art and Master of Arts in Deaf Studies: Teaching ASL from Gallaudet University in 2002 and 2006. After graduation, she moved to Philadelphia, PA to begin her new careers at University of Pennsylvania as a adjunct lecturer in American Sign Language and the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf as an American Sign Language Specialist for the Early Childhood Center.

On a successful note, Joy hosted an American Sign Language Round Table Symposium at the Pennsylvania School for the Deaf with the principal in October 2008 for the ASL Teachers and ASL Specialists to discuss on ASL learning, ASL teaching, ASL curriculum development, ASL Literacy and Academic ASL for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.

Joy has contributed some of her works with a couple of projects developed by Institute on Disabilities program at Temple University as a Deaf Studies Lecturer at Telecommunication Device Distribution Training in 2007 and as an American Sign Language Translator in a video clip at www.temple.edu/instituteondisabilities/programs/assistive/tddp/ in 2007.

On a personal level, Joy has a hearing daughter and enjoys reading, playing flag football and softball, socializing with friends and cooking. She currently is a treasurer for Maryland School for the Deaf Alumni Association and also, she is the secretary and director of entertainment for Eastern Deaf Timberfest organization.
